I preached at the First Mass of a dear friend, Fr Robbie Low – a former Anglican clergyman who was ordained a Catholic priest in October. I was just sent a link to the audio of the sermon, so if you want to listen please click here. Of course it is a very personal homily, but there are some bigger thoughts about the meaning of the priesthood and the Year of Faith that might interest others.

What a beautiful church with its iron work. I spent the last holy day of obligation in a deeply prayerful Mass there. The stone lectionary and altar are very poignantly beautiful. In fact it was my first experience of being a Catholic in another part of the country and the first thing which happened after Mass was a darling kind lady approached me and said “welcome friend, I dont recognise you,”. She was so warm and very special, she asked me to pray for her because she had just been diagnosed with early onset dementia. Bless that lady who made me feel truly part of the greater Catholic family, maybe we could all pray for her.
After my beautiful experience at Bodmin I wrote about praying for the Bodmin priests which you can read on my blog in ( A Weak Under a Rainbow ) that middle of the night call can be very difficult for them when the caller does not know the postcode and the g.p.s can not be programmed, cornish lane are black and often unnamed. The saints way appropriately runs fairly close by. What a special church to be a priest in in the year of faith.
Bodmin literally means home of the monks!
Congratulations to Fr Robbie and to all the other Priests who will be ordained during the Year of Faith. A good sermon Fr Stephen!
