I can’t resist linking to this provocative list of ’the best movies’ of the Noughties. There will be thousands of such lists over the next seven weeks as we see the decade out, but anyone who knows me just a little bit will know that I would rather argue about films than most other things. [And I'm now adding another list here: Time Out's 101 Films of the Decade.]
It’s great to see first place taken by Austrian auteur Michael Haneke (for Hidden), and second place by Paul Greengrass (for his two populist Bourne thrillers) – as if to say that both Hollywood and the arthouse can achieve cinematic greatness.

But it’s hard to take the list seriously when one of the worst films of the decade – Bond’s relaunch in Casino Royale – comes in at number eight…

Cache at #1? Good movie, but still, that’s pushing it. Some good ones on there, somewhat suspect list though. Looks like I gotta give Grizzly Man a watch.
Harry Potters series. Yes, seriously. :)

Oh come on…I can understand people not getting into the new Bond, but worst film of the decade?
Yeah, its kinda hard to take that list seriously. But if your interested in Film lists, check out mine. Just click my name.
I agree…. I typically like James Bond, but Casino Royale was not that great. One that I can’t believe wasn’t on the list was Gran Turino. But they included The Weatherman!?! Some puzzling choices of sure.
Bourne in second place? C’mon…
Do you mean it should be first, or not there at all?
Maybe in 101 is ok.
Seriously? Casino Royale as one of the worst films of the decade? No matter how you look at it, it’s atleast an above average film. Even if you like dislike the shift away from the classic depiction of Bond or feel that the movie lacked the gadgetry that most fans are used to, the storytelling, cinematography, and acting makes it atleast above average.
I’d be curious to hear your explanation for this, because most people (critics & the people around me) have a hard time finding fault with Casino Royale.
OK – maybe I was exaggerating. After all the hype, I was simply a bit disappointed. I like an action film, even a corney one – but, apart from the action scenes, I found this dull.
They took a chance and tried something different with Casino Royale. A bad boy as Agent 007 in the 21st century, just the way it should be! Maybe that is the reason why it’s so high on the list.
Well, quoting Godard: “all you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun” is a possible explanation :/
I looked at the list and I agree with a lot of it. I like how there is a variety of genres because then that means the people who were doing the rating were not biased towards a particular genre. Thanks for sharing this list :)
I agree about Casino Royale! should not at all have been included in the list of top 100! The winner is “Hidden”, I have never seen that movie, I will defintely watch it soon.
My top 3 of the decade are:
1. The Diving Bell And The Butterfily (French)
2. The Return (Russian)
3. The Son’s Room (Italian)
TWILIGHT is the best
Casino Royale is one of the the worst films of the decade?… It’s hard to take you seriously after that.
I can’t believe the Devil Wears Prada was on that list haha that movie was awful
The list is stupid. School of Rock? The Orphanage?
Course I also agree with the other comments. Casino Royale may not belong that high up on a decade list, but it was the best Bond movie to come out in years.
WoW. Looking at that list brings back some good memories!
Who hear is an Anchorman movie fan?
oops.. Shawshank redumption not in the list?
That was in 1994! Not in this decade.
No Kill Bill?
Casino Royale certainly deserves to be in there.
@rohit Shawshank was released in 1994!
I’m fairly disappointed with this list, and do very much so agree that Casino Royale should not have been included much less so high. And Team America? There are so many better films.
Casino Royale was awesome and the blu-ray has awesome PQ
Avatar will be the best I think!!
well, Transformers-2 was not very bad as for me…
Ahh yes Casino Royale, another Bondism that 20 years from now when we’re sitting at home watching T.V and the bond Marathon comes on TNT it will remind of us of a time when the country was obsessed with No Limit Texas Hold Em!! Just like a View to a Kill reminds us that Duran Duran was huge once! I didn’t see the list but I hope Knock Around Guys with Vin Diezal was higher up the chain than Casino Royale. Watching John Malcovich play a mobster with a Brooklyn accent should definitely not go unpunished!
Vagrant
‘Team America’ is there I suppose because it sums up the spirit of the mid-Noughties so well, even if it’s not a great film in its own right. I’d definitely agree with ‘Hidden’ at number 1 though, or at least somewhere in the top ten.
